Crown Restoration

The crown is the zone you see in photos and mirrors last — and the one with its own rules: a spiral growth pattern, a bigger appetite for grafts, and a slower timeline.

Why the crown is different

Hair at the vertex grows in a whorl — a spiral radiating from a central point, with direction changing continuously around it. Reproducing that spiral is the surgical challenge: grafts placed against the natural flow stand out immediately when the hair is short. The crown is also geometrically expensive: it is a circle that expands in every direction as loss progresses, so it consumes more grafts per visual improvement than the front.

There is a third difference, and we state it plainly because many clinics do not: crown results take longer. Circulation at the vertex is slower and the scalp thicker, so final crown results typically arrive around six months later than frontal work — meaning a full crown verdict can take 18 months or more. Combination support such as PRP and clinically advised supplements is often recommended alongside.

Planning a crown honestly

Because the crown can keep expanding, the medical team weighs your age, loss trajectory and donor budget before committing grafts there. Sometimes the right answer is crown plus frontal in a staged plan; sometimes it is stabilising medication first, transplant second. Chasing a moving crown with a finite donor supply is how patients elsewhere run out of hair to give — we plan so that never happens to you.

If your crown loss is early and active, the team may advise medication first and surgery once the pattern stabilises. That advice is free, too.

Candidacy

Is crown restoration right for you?

Typically suitable if you…

  • Have a defined, relatively stable crown thinning pattern
  • Have healthy donor density at the back and sides
  • Accept the longer crown timeline of up to 18+ months
  • Are open to combination support (PRP, medication) where advised
  • Have expectations set by an honest graft-budget conversation

May need a different plan if you…

  • Have early, rapidly expanding crown loss — stabilise first
  • Have limited donor supply that frontal work would use better
  • Expect the crown to match teenage density — its geometry makes that unrealistic
  • Are unwilling to consider maintenance for surrounding native hair

Candidacy is confirmed by the medical team from photos including a clear top-down view of the crown.

Benefits and honest limitations

Benefits

  • Closes the gap that shows under overhead light and in photos
  • Whorl reconstructed in the natural spiral direction
  • Combines well with frontal work in a staged master plan
  • Sapphire FUE handles the larger session sizes crowns need
  • Donor-conscious planning protects future options

Limitations

  • Highest graft consumption per visual improvement of any zone
  • Final crown results take roughly 6 months longer than frontal areas
  • Progressive loss around the transplanted zone remains possible
  • Very large crowns may need two sessions for satisfying density

Procedure day

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

    Mapping the whorl

The spiral direction of your vertex is mapped so implantation follows your natural flow.

    ≈ 45 minutes

  2. 2

    Local anaesthesia

Donor and crown numbed; pressure rather than pain from here.

    ≈ 15 minutes

  3. 3

    Extraction

Follicular units extracted with the donor budget agreed in your plan.

    2–3 hours

  4. 4

    Break

Lunch while grafts are counted and prepared.

    ≈ 45 minutes

  5. 5

    Implantation in the spiral

Grafts placed following the whorl, density graded outward from the centre.

    2–3 hours

  6. 6

    Aftercare handover

Kit, written protocol, first-wash booking — plus crown-specific timeline notes.

    ≈ 30 minutes

Recovery and the crown timeline

  • Days 1–10: standard healing — washing routine daily, crusts clear by day 10.
  • Weeks 2–8: shock shedding, as in every transplant zone.
  • Months 3–6: first regrowth appears; the crown lags the front — expected.
  • Months 6–12: density builds; overhead-light photos improve steadily.
  • Months 12–18+: crown maturity — roughly six months behind frontal zones.
  • Support: PRP and clinically advised supplements can assist crown progress where recommended.

Risks and possible complications

Crown work shares the standard low-risk profile: temporary swelling, numbness, itching, folliculitis, rarely infection or reduced graft survival. The crown-specific risk is expectational — judging the result too early. We schedule crown reviews knowing month 8 can look modest and month 16 can look excellent, and we show you progress against that curve at your 1, 3, 6 and 12-month check-ins.

How your crown restoration quote works

Because crowns consume more grafts per visible change, the written quote after your assessment includes an honest conversation about graft budget and, where relevant, staging.

  1. 1

    Send photos of your hair

Front, top, crown and the donor area at the back. It takes minutes and costs nothing.

  2. 2

    Receive your written plan

The medical team estimates your grafts, recommends the technique and sends a fixed, all-inclusive quote in writing.

  3. 3

    Nothing changes without your OK

Your plan is the reference on the day of your procedure. Any change is explained and agreed with you first.

Every quote is personal and given in writing after your assessment; the written quote is the binding one.

Questions

Crown restoration — frequently asked questions

Why does everyone say crowns are harder?

Three reasons: the whorl pattern must be reconstructed in the correct spiral, the circular area consumes grafts faster than linear zones, and results mature about six months later than frontal work due to slower circulation and thicker scalp at the vertex.

How long until my crown looks done?

Plan for 18 months, sometimes a little more — roughly six months beyond the frontal timeline. You will see clear progress from months 6–12, but the crown keeps improving after the front has finished.

Should I do crown and hairline in one session?

Sometimes yes, sometimes staged — it depends on total graft numbers, donor capacity and safe extraction limits. Combined plans are common; the assessment tells you whether yours fits in one session.

Will the transplanted crown stop future loss around it?

No — transplanted follicles are resistant, but native hair around them can continue thinning. That is why crown plans often include stabilising medication advice and why donor supply is budgeted for a possible future session.

Is PRP worth it for the crown?

PRP is offered as supportive therapy and is often recommended for crown cases, where every circulatory advantage helps. It supports healing and growth; it is not a substitute for grafts. Your plan states plainly whether the team recommends it for your case.

My crown loss is small — should I wait?

Possibly. If the pattern is early and active, medication to stabilise it may be the better first move, with surgery once the target stops moving. We give you that answer honestly in the free assessment, even when it means no procedure today.
